JPG, PNG or WebP: which image format should you use?
A quick practical guide to choosing a common image format before you upload or submit a file.
JPG
JPG is a common choice for photographs because it usually produces much smaller files than an uncompressed image. Repeatedly saving the same JPG can reduce quality, so keep an original when possible.
PNG
PNG is useful when you need lossless image data or transparency. For ordinary photographs, PNG can be much larger than JPG.
WebP
WebP is supported by modern browsers and can provide compact files for many web uses. Before using it for an application or upload form, confirm that the destination accepts WebP.
Privacy note: Where the tool says processing happens in your browser, the selected file is processed locally and is not uploaded by that tool.
