How to reduce an image to 50 KB

A practical way to get a photo under a 50 KB limit without pretending that every image can keep the same dimensions and quality.

Start with the requirement

If a form says the image must be no more than 50 KB, treat 50 KB as a maximum unless the official instructions say something different. A file that is 49 KB meets a maximum-size limit; a file that is 51 KB does not.

Requirements are application-specific. PoofPix should not turn one 50 KB example into a universal rule for every application. Check the official instructions for the form you are submitting.

Use dimensions before pushing quality too far

If an image is still too large after normal compression, reducing its pixel dimensions can have a larger effect than repeatedly lowering JPEG quality. Start with reasonable dimensions for the task, then compress again.

For signatures and application photos, dimensions can be part of the requirement too. A file can be below the size limit and still be wrong if its dimensions or format do not match the official instructions.

Check the finished file

After processing, check the actual file size, dimensions and format. Do not rely on a filename or the setting you selected.

If the result is still above the maximum, resize or use a more suitable output format rather than claiming the file is compliant. PoofPix reports the actual result so you can make that decision.

Privacy note: Where the tool says processing happens in your browser, the selected file is processed locally and is not uploaded by that tool.
